THE 2019 SURVEY OF THE GENDER AND RACE OF TITLE IX STAFF IN PHILADELPHIA AREA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
This data set reflects self-reported staff membership in Title IX related positions for most of the Philadelphia area colleges and universities as of August 23, 2019. The assignations of values as to race and gender are, of course, subjective, and mostly derived from observation of the staff member’s description, including photograph if available, on the school’s webpage. According to this data it seems that:
A. If you are a man reporting being the victim of sexual misconduct including sexual assault or harassment, in 29 out of 39 schools surveyed, the person in charge of coordinating your Title IX complaint is a woman.
B. If you are a man responding to a complaint of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault or harassment, in 29 out of 39 schools, the person in charge of coordinating your complaint is a woman and possibly only 30% or less of the schools have a man as named member of the Title IX staff.
C. If you are a man of color either reporting student misconduct including sexual assault or harassment, or you are a man of color responding to student misconduct including sexual assault or harassment, it seems that only three Title IX Coordinators out of a total 39 schools surveyed (at the historically black Cheyney University, at Swarthmore College, and at the University of the Sciences) are a woman of color. The Title IX coordinator at Albright College may also be of color. It thus appears that most of the other Title IX staff in these schools are.
D. There is a cluster of outliers, Catholic schools, where men in other positions also serve in Title IX Coordinator roles but seem to be supported by an entirely female staff in a way that suggests their supervisory role is merely a response to culture.
